The $82 bull case and the $26 bear case can both be internally coherent because each starts from different assumptions about IonQ’s future. Before choosing either, define the evidence that would invalidate it, or the valuation becomes a commitment looking for confirmation.
At 8:47 a.m. in Chicago, Daniel sat at his kitchen table with a cold coffee, a position-size calculator, and IONQ quoted at $46.84 on his screen. He had two valuation notes open. One pointed to $82. The other pointed to $26.
Daniel is an illustrative composite, not a real customer or case study. His problem is real enough: he wanted the upside implied by $82, but he had no written condition for admitting the bull case had failed.
The market was about to open. If he bought first and defined his reasoning later, a sharp move could turn a valuation exercise into an unmanaged position. He might defend the stock at $40, then $35, because nothing in his original thesis told him when to stop.
Two prices can describe two different futures
A valuation is a set of assumptions expressed as a price.
The $82 frame may assume IonQ converts technical progress into sustained commercial growth, expands its future cash-generating potential, and earns a valuation that reflects confidence in quantum computing’s development. The $26 frame may assume slower adoption, greater financing pressure, continued losses, or a lower multiple as investors demand clearer evidence.
Neither price proves what happens next. Each tells you what must go right, what could go wrong, and how much confidence the analyst places in an uncertain future.
That distinction matters with a company reporting a record loss that includes a $1.6 billion warrant charge. A warrant charge can complicate the headline loss because accounting effects and operating performance are different analytical questions. Yet dismissing the charge without examining what it says about the capital structure would be careless too.
The useful question is not, “Which target sounds more convincing?” Ask, “What conditions have to remain true for this target to deserve my capital?”
Write the invalidation condition before the position
Daniel closed both price-target notes and opened his trading journal. Instead of writing “IONQ to $82,” he separated the thesis into three parts:
- What evidence supports the valuation frame?
- What observable change would weaken that evidence?
- What loss can the account absorb if the thesis fails?
This order prevents the target from controlling the analysis. If $82 comes first, every new fact can become support for $82. If the invalidation condition comes first, new facts have somewhere to land.
A useful invalidation condition must be observable. “The story feels weaker” gives you no decision rule. A defined deterioration in the operating assumptions behind the valuation, an unexpected change in financing risk, or price action that breaches a preselected risk boundary can trigger review.
Price and thesis invalidation also need separate treatment. A stock can cross a stop while the long-term company thesis remains intact. It can also stay above your stop while evidence underneath the valuation deteriorates. One governs position risk. The other governs conviction.
This is why rejected trade signals can expose weaknesses in your decision process. A rejection should record the failed condition, not merely the trader’s mood.
Position size turns uncertainty into a boundary
Suppose Daniel’s account is $20,000 and he limits one trade idea to a 0.5% planned loss. That gives him a $100 risk budget. If his entry and stop are $5 apart, the arithmetic permits 20 shares before fees and slippage.
Those figures are illustrations, not a recommendation for IONQ or any other security.
The calculation does something a price target cannot. It defines what failure costs before Daniel knows whether $82 or $26 will prove closer to reality.
A wide valuation range should usually increase humility. It signals sensitivity to assumptions, not an invitation to average the two targets into a comfortable answer of $54. Midpoints can create false precision when the underlying scenarios are discontinuous.
Drawdown deserves the same attention. A thesis may eventually work while producing a loss the account or trader cannot tolerate along the way. The same survival principle appears when max drawdown enters an attractive backtest: the endpoint matters less if the path forces you out.
Make the approval gate earn its place
With minutes left before the open, Daniel had not solved IonQ’s future. He had done something more useful for the next decision.
His queued trade now had four visible fields: the valuation frame, the invalidation evidence, the price-risk boundary, and the maximum account loss. The $82 target could no longer approve the trade by itself. Neither could fear of the $26 case reject it automatically.
An approval-gated trading process creates a pause between analysis and execution. The AI may generate and queue a signal, but a human still approves or rejects it. That pause has value only when the reviewer has explicit conditions to inspect.
Before your next bullish or bearish commitment, write one sentence beginning, “I will reconsider this view if…” Then add the account-level loss you will accept while finding out.
Daniel’s coffee was still cold when the opening bell arrived. The order remained queued until his invalidation rule and position size were complete.
